Course goals & objectives
Here at Fair Haven the Physical Education Department's main focus is to promote daily physical activity to all students and develop lifetime sport and leisure activities that they can all enjoy. The skills and knowledge of these sports and activities are taught so the students understand the history and proper way to play these sports. In teaching these sports and activities students not only gain an understanding of their own personal wellness, but also work on problem solving, life management skills, social skills, and character development. Integrated strands of cross curricular material are also included into Physical Education classes in order to reinforce and refine educational skills. The Physical Education Department at Fair Haven is focused on teaching the students both physically and mentally, and preparing the students for a lifetime of healthy living. |
Physical Education Projects and Events
- Physical Fitness Testing- Physical Fitness Testing takes place twice a year, once in October and once in May. During this time students are tested on four fitness activities, push ups, sit ups, PACER, and sit and reach. These tests show the students muscular strength, muscular endurance, cardio vascular endurance, and flexibility.
- Annual “ Snowball” Event- “Snowball” is a school wide performance where each grade level performs a dance to a popular song. Each grade level also represents a local Connecticut college or university by wearing the schools colors and performing the schools fight song. The main focus of this event is to teach students about the New Haven Promise.
- Mighty Milers- Mighty Milers is a free running program for students of all fitness levels and is sponsored by New York Road Runners. Students start off each Physical Education class with a 10 minute run and tally up as many miles they can in a 13 week span. Every student’s goal is to complete one (1) marathon, which is equal to 26.2 miles.
